Flipper Devices has announced that the development of its popular Flipper Zero portable pen-testing device’s firmware will continue. However, this time around, it will be done in collaboration with the community. The company is shifting its focus to building new devices while relying on community contributions for firmware updates.
Shift in Development Approach
The official firmware for the Flipper Zero will still be maintained by the internal team, but full-time feature development has come to an end. The latest stable release of the firmware, version 1.4.3, was made available in December 2025. At that point, the team felt that the firmware had reached maturity with a stable SDK and APIs and all promised features properly implemented.
To address concerns from the community about development coming to a halt, Flipper Devices has developed a new approach for the project. This new approach relies on closer interaction with contributors to keep firmware development moving forward. The team will maintain oversight of the development, paying particular attention to AI-generated code that touches low-level functions and is hard to verify, as well as changes affecting the user interface or requiring documentation updates.
Community-Driven Development
The new approach involves several key changes:
* Flipper Zero requests will be evaluated on a weekly basis,
* Communication with the team will occur only through GitHub Discussions, where new requests will also be voted,
* Community pull requests will be accepted but with stricter review requirements,
* Firmware changes will require mandatory integration and regression testing, which will be open to the community.
This shift in development approach is aimed at giving users more control over what features are developed next for the Flipper Zero. With over one million users generating a significant volume of communication, the company’s small team can no longer manage direct messages on all social media channels. All requests will now be submitted to GitHub Discussions and prioritized based on the votes they receive from the community.
Focus on New Devices
Flipper Devices is also focusing on building new devices, such as the Flipper One open Linux platform, which was completed with the help of the community. The company has also launched a new device called the Busy Bar, designed to help people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) reduce distractions. This device will be available for open sale on July 14 in several countries.
Conclusion
The shift in development approach for the Flipper Zero firmware is aimed at keeping development moving forward while giving users more control over what features are developed next. With a smaller internal team and greater reliance on community contributions, the future of the Flipper Zero looks bright.
