The Decline of Physical Game Discs: A Decade of Slumping Sales

The recent announcement by Sony to discontinue physical game discs has sent shockwaves through the gaming community. However, a closer look at the data reveals that this decision was not made overnight. In fact, the decline of physical game sales began over a decade ago.

According to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella’s data, physical game sales in the US have been steadily declining since 2009. The peak year for physical game sales was 2009, with 297 million units sold in the 12 months ending June of that year. In contrast, only 37 million physical units were sold in the last 12 months.

This trend is not unique to Sony; other platforms have also seen significant declines in physical game spending. The data also shows that the number of games selling over 100,000 physical units has decreased dramatically since 2008. In fact, only seven PlayStation games had sold over 100,000 physical units so far in 2026.

The top-selling physical PlayStation game has only sold a paltry 275,000 units in the US so far this year. While there are some small signs of hope for the physical game market, such as a 4 percent increase in aggregate spending on physical video games in the US year-to-date, it is a mere blip following 16 straight years of sizable declines.

The shift towards digital downloads has been a significant factor in the decline of physical game sales. Console gamers have overwhelmingly voted with their wallets in favor of convenience over permanence. Many big-budget games are now skipping retail releases altogether or offering ‘download in a box’ options like Game Key Cards or printed download codes.

In recent years, console gamers have been fine with skipping the disc drive entirely. In fact, 27 percent of all PS5 hardware and 52 percent of all Xbox Series hardware sold in the US so far has been ‘Digital Only’ editions. This trend is unlikely to change anytime soon, making Sony’s decision to halt physical game sales a practical inevitability.
